History of the Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps

The Royal Naval Volunteer Cadet Corps (RNVCC) was founded in Portsmouth to give sailors’ children a positive outlet — and quickly evolved into a thriving youth organisation. Modelled on the successful Royal Marines cadet unit in Eastney, the first RNVCC unit began at HMS Victory Barracks (now HMS Nelson). At its peak, the RNVCC operated across numerous Royal Navy bases.

Today, active units remain at HMS Collingwood, HMS Excellent, and HMS Sultan. Originally limited to sons of serving sailors, the RNVCC is now open to boys and girls from all backgrounds. As a fully sponsored part of the Royal Navy — and distinct from other UK cadet forces — the RNVCC has always retained its unique identity, structure, and strong naval ties.
