Joining the Volunteer Cadet Corps is about far more than attending a weekly cadet night. It’s about becoming part of a community that encourages young people to challenge themselves, discover new interests and develop the confidence and skills to succeed in life.
Whether your ambition is to learn new skills, enjoy exciting adventures, make lifelong friendships or simply try something different, the VCC offers opportunities that are difficult to find anywhere else.
Every week brings something different. As a cadet you’ll have the opportunity to experience an exciting range of activities, including:
Whether on land, at sea or in the field, every activity is designed to challenge, inspire and help you grow.
The VCC brings together young people from all backgrounds with one thing in common – a willingness to learn, challenge themselves and support others.
You’ll make new friends, work as part of a team and become part of a welcoming community where everyone is encouraged to succeed. Many cadets say the friendships they make are one of the best parts of being in the VCC.
Some of the best moments in cadet life happen away from your local unit.
Throughout the year, cadets can attend weekend camps, annual camps, expeditions, competitions and national events. You’ll meet cadets from across the country, take on new challenges and enjoy experiences that few other youth organisations can offer.
Every camp is an opportunity to learn something new, push yourself further and create memories that last a lifetime.
The experiences you gain as a cadet go far beyond parade nights.
Through practical training and real responsibility you’ll develop confidence, communication, leadership, resilience and teamwork; qualities that will help you throughout school, university, employment and everyday life.
As you progress, you’ll have opportunities to take on leadership roles, mentor younger cadets and gain nationally recognised qualifications, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and First Aid certifications.
As a cadet in the Volunteer Cadet Corps, you’ll have the opportunity to work towards a range of nationally recognised qualifications and awards that recognise your achievements and help prepare you for the future.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award encourages young people to challenge themselves through volunteering, physical activity, developing new skills and completing adventurous expeditions. Available at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, the Award is highly respected by employers, colleges and universities and demonstrates commitment, resilience and determination.
Through the Cadet Vocational College (CVC), eligible cadets can work towards vocational diplomas that recognise the knowledge, skills and experience gained through their cadet service. These qualifications support personal development while enhancing future education and career opportunities.
Older cadets may also have the opportunity to achieve the ILM Certificate in Team Leading, an industry-recognised leadership qualification. This develops essential management and leadership skills, including effective communication, team building, decision-making and motivating others – valuable qualities for both employment and higher education.
In addition, cadets can gain first aid qualifications, leadership awards and other accredited training through their participation in the Corps, providing practical skills that are valuable in everyday life as well as future careers.
These recognised qualifications demonstrate commitment, initiative and personal development, helping cadets stand out when applying for college, university, apprenticeships or employment, while giving them the confidence and skills to succeed wherever their future takes them.
If you’re aged 9 to 18 and looking for your next adventure, we’d love to welcome you to the Volunteer Cadet Corps.
