The VCC Training Syllabus is a structured and progressive programme that helps young people develop confidence, leadership, teamwork and practical life skills through exciting, hands-on experiences.
Designed to challenge and inspire, the syllabus provides a clear pathway for cadets to build their knowledge and abilities as they progress through the Corps. Every lesson, activity and experience is carefully planned to support personal development, encouraging cadets to become resilient, responsible and confident young people.
Whether following the Royal Naval, Royal Marines or Royal Marines Band training pathway, cadets learn through a combination of practical training, adventure, teamwork and service. From seamanship and fieldcraft to music, first aid, leadership and community engagement, every aspect of the syllabus is designed to equip cadets with skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Alongside the core syllabus, cadets can choose to take part in a wide range of specialist activities, including boating, shooting, adventure training, Field Gun, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, STEM, camps and expeditions, allowing them to tailor their cadet experience to their interests.
More than just a training programme, the VCC Training Syllabus develops character. It encourages cadets to embrace new challenges, support one another and strive to achieve their full potential while living the VCC’s values and ethos.
The Royal Naval Cadet Training Syllabus is designed to introduce young people to the traditions, skills and values of the Royal Navy while helping them develop confidence, leadership and practical life skills that will benefit them long into the future.
The syllabus follows a structured and progressive training programme, allowing cadets to build their knowledge and experience step by step. Beginning with core cadet skills and progressing through increasingly challenging subjects, cadets develop at their own pace while unlocking new opportunities and responsibilities.
Training covers a broad range of maritime and military subjects, including seamanship, navigation, communications, ropework, naval history and traditions, leadership, first aid, drill and ceremonial. Alongside classroom learning, cadets take part in practical activities, boating and afloat training, adventure training, STEM, community projects and visits to Royal Navy establishments and vessels.
Every lesson has a purpose. Whether learning how to tie a bowline, understanding naval customs or taking part in a leadership exercise, cadets develop teamwork, communication, problem-solving and resilience – skills that will benefit them throughout education, employment and everyday life.
The syllabus also provides opportunities to explore specialist interests through activities such as boating, shooting, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, music, first aid and adventure training, allowing every cadet to shape a journey that reflects their interests and ambitions.
The Royal Marines Cadet Training Syllabus is designed to inspire young people through challenge, adventure and teamwork while introducing them to the values and ethos of the Royal Marines.
Training follows a progressive pathway that enables cadets to continually develop their skills, confidence and leadership abilities. Starting with the fundamentals, cadets build experience through increasingly demanding activities that encourage resilience, responsibility and personal growth.
The syllabus includes fieldcraft, navigation, leadership, first aid, physical development, drill and ceremonial, map reading, communications and military knowledge, complemented by adventure training, expeditions, camps and community engagement. Every activity is designed to challenge cadets in a safe, supportive environment while encouraging them to work together and achieve their goals.
Every lesson contributes to developing qualities such as courage, determination, self-discipline and teamwork. Whether completing a navigation exercise, competing in Field Gun or leading a team through an outdoor challenge, cadets gain practical experience and valuable life skills that extend far beyond their time in the VCC.
Cadets can also choose from a range of specialist activities, including shooting, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, adventure training, first aid and leadership courses, allowing them to pursue new interests while developing their full potential.
The Band Training Syllabus provides cadets with the opportunity to develop musical ability, confidence and discipline through one of the Volunteer Cadet Corps’ most distinctive training programmes.
Structured to support both complete beginners and experienced musicians, the syllabus enables cadets to progress through clearly defined stages while building technical ability, musical knowledge and performance skills. Every cadet is encouraged to develop at their own pace, supported by experienced instructors in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Training includes instrumental tuition on brass, woodwind and percussion instruments, as well as Corps of Drums instruction, music theory, ensemble performance, ceremonial drill and marching. As cadets develop, they have opportunities to perform at military ceremonies, concerts, remembrance events, civic occasions and national Volunteer Cadet Corps activities.
Every rehearsal develops more than musical ability. Cadets build confidence, communication, teamwork, self-discipline and leadership while learning the importance of commitment and working towards a shared goal. These are qualities that benefit them throughout school, future careers and everyday life.
Alongside musical training, band cadets can also participate in the wider opportunities offered by the Volunteer Cadet Corps, including first aid, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, adventure training, leadership courses, camps and community projects, creating a well-rounded and rewarding cadet experience.
